In a swift midnight operation, Kolkata Police's ARS Detective Department cracked down on an illegal call centre running from a ground-floor flat in Behala's Parnasree area. At around 2 AM, Anti Rowdy Squad (ARS) officers raided the premises at Sudha Kiran building in Behala's Netaji Subhas Road and caught seven men red-handed. The gang was pretending to be support staff from popular companies like Norton Antivirus, PayPal, and Geek Squad, tricking American citizens into giving remote access to their computers and stealing large sums of money. Reportedly, these scammers used to show forged documents and took remote access of the US citizen's devices and siphoned huge amount of American Dollars on the pretext of customer support/service charge
The scammers used email bombing to scare victims into believing their devices were hacked, then showed fake documents to gain trust and charge fake service fees. Kolkata Police seized six mobile phones, five laptops, two Wi-Fi routers, four headphones, and a bunch of keys as evidence. A case has been registered under various sections of the IT Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for cheating, identity theft, and forgery. The arrested men, aged between 31 and 38, come from different parts of Kolkata and will be presented in court later today with a request for police custody.
This bust highlights the growing problem of cyber fraud targeting foreign citizens from hidden setups in the city. Authorities say such illegal call centres cause huge financial losses abroad while tarnishing India's image. The quick action by the Kolkata Police Detective Department shows strong efforts to curb these tech-based crimes and protect innocent people from falling victim to clever online tricks.
