Mamata calls for strict security, proper arrangements for 'Bishwa Ijtema' in wake of Messi event chaos

Following a recent unpleasant incident at Kolkata’s Yuva Bharati Krirangan, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday issued stringent directives to the administration to enhance security for upcoming large events. In a special meeting held at the Nabanna Sabhagriha (State Secretariat), the Chief Minister specifically instructed officials to remain extra vigilant to prevent any recurrence of untoward incidents, emphasizing the need for all programs to be conducted in an orderly and peaceful manner, especially with elections approaching.

The meeting was primarily focused on the security and preparation arrangements for the 'Bishwa Ijtema' religious congregation, scheduled to be held in Pandua, Hooghly, from January 2 to January 5. Attended by senior ministers, including Firhad Hakim, Javed Khan, Siddiqullah Chowdhury, and Arup Biswas, the CM stressed the need for an adequate number of volunteers during the event. Her clear instructions underscored that the administration must ensure a well-managed and peaceful environment for all future large gatherings.

Sources also indicate that the Chief Minister inquired about the progress of the investigation into the Yuva Bharati Stadium incident. The state government's inquiry committee, which visited the stadium on Sunday, questioned Dev Kumar Nand, who was asked to be present. Police sources reveal that Nand stated he was not present during the incident and thus had no knowledge of it. The committee took a firm stance, questioning how an official holding a responsible position could be unaware of the entire incident. Subsequently, the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate has been instructed to issue a fresh summons to Dev Kumar Nand for a detailed and thorough inquiry.
