No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
Tollywood actor and former Trinamool Congress (TMC) youth leader Shoaib Kabeer has officially switched allegiances by joining the Janata Unnayan Party (JUP). The party was recently floated by Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir following his suspension from the ruling TMC. Upon his induction on Wednesday, Shoaib was immediately appointed as the JUP’s state spokesperson, signaling the new party’s intent to leverage popular young faces to build its organizational strength ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.
Shoaib, a prominent figure in the Bengali film and OTT industry, cited internal factionalism and the "stifling" neglect of the younger generation as his primary reasons for leaving the TMC. Having served as the Vice-President of the Murshidabad District Youth Trinamool, he claimed that many individuals within the ruling party do not have its best interests at heart. He expressed that despite working closely with leaders like Saayoni Ghosh, the growing ideological gaps and constant infighting made it impossible for him to continue.
A native of Murshidabad who built his career in Kolkata, Shoaib emphasized his desire to fight for his roots. He is a well-known actor, having appeared in Anik Dutta’s acclaimed film ‘Aparajit’ and starred alongside Ankush Hazra in ‘Mirza’. His chilling portrayal of Ajmal Kasab in the OTT series ‘2008 Mumbai Attacks’ recently brought him significant critical acclaim. By transitioning into a key political role, he aims to bridge the gap between his artistic influence and public service.
