The Commissioner of Police, Kolkata, has issued a comprehensive traffic notification for New Year’s Eve (31.12.2025) and New Year’s Day (01.01.2026). To ensure public safety and prevent congestion, movement of heavy goods vehicles will be strictly restricted towards the Maidan area from several key intersections, including AJC Bose Road, Strand Road, and Mayo Road. These restrictions will be effective from 4:00 PM on December 31 until the early hours of January 2, with specific time slots allocated for each day.
Vehicular traffic in the popular entertainment hub of Park Street will be heavily regulated. Park Street will operate as a "ONE-WAY" thoroughfare from West to East, while Shakespeare Sarani will be directed East to West until 3:00 AM. Other arterial roads like Ho-Chi-Minh Sarani, Middleton Street, and Little Russel Street will also see one-way traffic implementations. Additionally, right turns from Park Street onto Russel Street will be prohibited to maintain a smooth flow of pedestrians and cars.
Parking has been strictly prohibited on major thoroughfares, including Park Street, Camac Street, and Free School Street, during these two days. However, specific parallel parking zones have been designated along Russel Street and Wood Street to accommodate visitors. Emergency vehicles carrying essential commodities like oxygen, milk, and medicines are exempted from these restrictions, alongside small goods vehicles with a gross weight not exceeding 1600 kg.
The Kolkata Traffic Police will be deployed in large numbers to manage the influx of revelers and enforce these regulations. Commuters are advised to follow the diversions and use alternative routes such as St. Georges Gate Road and A.P.C Road where possible. These measures aim to provide a safe environment for citizens celebrating the start of 2026 while minimizing inconvenience for daily travelers within the city.
