Vande Bharat sleeper train for Guwahati-Kolkata route coming soon; PM Modi will launch

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday officially introduced India’s first Vande Bharat sleeper train, marking a historic milestone for Indian Railways. Set to operate between Guwahati and Kolkata, this indigenously designed train is expected to be flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the next 15 to 20 days. Unlike the existing chair car variants, the sleeper version is specifically crafted for long-distance overnight journeys, promising a premium and comfortable experience that rivals air travel.

The state-of-the-art train consists of 16 coaches, featuring a combination of eleven 3-tier AC, four 2-tier AC, and one First AC coach. Designed for speeds of up to 180 kmph, the train underwent rigorous high-speed trials on the Kota-Nagda section, where it demonstrated exceptional stability and ride quality. During the trials, a "water-glass test" was conducted, showing zero spillage even at peak speeds, underscoring its advanced suspension and jerk-free technology.

Passengers can look forward to world-class amenities, including automatic exterior doors, sensor-based bio-vacuum toilets, and a specialized disinfectant technology to ensure high sanitation standards. The train is also equipped with the indigenous ‘Kavach’ anti-collision system and emergency talk-back units for enhanced safety. To add a localized touch, the minister revealed that the train starting from Guwahati will serve Assamese cuisine, while the one departing from Kolkata will offer traditional Bengali food.

The new service will significantly strengthen the connectivity between Northeast India and West Bengal. Fares are expected to be much more affordable than air tickets, with 3AC prices starting at approximately ₹2,300. By the end of 2026, the government plans to roll out 12 more such sleeper trains across the country, further transforming the landscape of semi-high-speed rail travel in India.
