At least five people, including a child, were injured after an accidental firing inside a public sector bank in the Bidhannagar area under Phansidewa block of Siliguri police district on Tuesday morning. The incident triggered panic among customers and staff as the bank was crowded during peak morning hours.
According to eyewitnesses, the security guard deployed at the bank accidentally dropped his loaded firearm on the floor. The gun discharged on impact, with bullets striking customers standing in queues. A woman and a child were among those seriously injured in the sudden firing inside the bank premises.
Police rushed to the spot soon after receiving information and secured the area. The security guard was taken into custody for questioning as authorities began investigating the circumstances that led to the accidental discharge.
