The Kolkata Police have arrested a 22-year-old youth on charges of raping a college student in the Anandapur area of East Kolkata. The accused, identified as Kaushik Mandal, is an alumnus of a reputable college in South Kolkata and originally hails from Mohammad Bazar in Birbhum. According to police sources, Kaushik and the victim, a resident of Barasat, were acquaintances since their college days. The incident allegedly occurred during a house party at a common friend's residence a few months ago.
The victim stated in her complaint that she had accompanied her college friends to the party where alcohol was consumed throughout the night. It is alleged that Kaushik surreptitiously spiked her soft drink with an intoxicant, rendering her semi-conscious. Taking advantage of her state, the accused allegedly led her to a separate room and raped her while other friends were in different parts of the house. Kaushik also reportedly threatened the victim with dire consequences if she disclosed the matter to anyone.
Traumatized and mentally disturbed, the young woman returned home to Barasat but eventually broke down and narrated the ordeal to her parents. Initially, a complaint was lodged with the Barasat police district, which was later transferred to the Anandapur Police Station as the jurisdiction of the crime fell under East Kolkata. Following a preliminary investigation and medical examination of the victim, the police tracked down Kaushik, who is currently employed at a private firm while managing his family business.
The Kolkata Police produced the accused before a city court on Wednesday, seeking his custody for further interrogation. A team of investigators is expected to take the accused to the scene of the crime for a reconstruction of the events. This incident has once again sparked concerns regarding the safety of women in the city, especially during private social gatherings. The police are also questioning the friends who were present at the party to determine if there was any negligence or complicity.
