Angry passengers staged a rail blockade at Sonarpur railway station on the Sealdah South section on Thursday morning after a local train failed to arrive on time, disrupting services during peak hours.
The Sonarpur local scheduled for 8:42 am did not reach the station, prompting commuters to climb down onto the tracks in protest. Hundreds of office-goers, students and daily passengers were left stranded, leading to growing frustration at the station.
Protesters said train delays on this route have become a regular problem and alleged that repeated complaints to the railway administration have not resulted in any lasting solution. The agitation affected train movement towards Sealdah, with several services halted at different stations.
Officials from the Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force reached the spot and persuaded the passengers to withdraw the protest after assuring necessary action. The blockade was lifted around 9 am, train services were restored, but commuters warned of larger protests if punctuality does not improve.
