Kolkata Police have arrested two persons in connection with a ‘digital arrest’ scam involving crores of rupees, following a raid in Nadia district. The accused, identified as Devtanu Sarkar and Sourav Biswas, were apprehended from the Hanskhali area, officials said.
During the operation, police recovered multiple mobile phones, passbooks, cheque books, ATM cards and several suspicious documents. A hardware wallet was also seized, along with cryptocurrency worth $3,800, according to police sources.
The case dates back to September, when fraudsters allegedly threatened a resident of Netajinagar in south Kolkata with ‘digital arrest’ and extorted around ₹1.79 crore. A written complaint was later lodged at Netajinagar police station, following which Lalbazar took over the investigation.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, police raided the Hanskhali police station area on Wednesday and arrested the duo, both residents of the locality. An FIR has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, and investigators are probing possible links to a larger network.
