JJAI jute mill shutdown leaves 4,000 jobless, labour unions protest in Barrackpore

Several jute mills in the Barrackpore industrial area remain shut, intensifying concerns over job losses after the sudden closure of the JJAI Jute Mill in Jagatdal. The shutdown has rendered nearly 4,000 workers unemployed, with mill owners citing a decline in jute production as the primary reason behind the decision.

In response, four labour unions jointly staged a protest in front of the mill gate, demanding immediate intervention and protection of workers’ livelihoods. To avoid any untoward incident, a large police force was deployed at the site as tensions ran high in the industrial belt.

CITU leader Gargi Chatterjee said repeated mill closures have pushed workers into distress and uncertainty. Former Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh alleged that exploitation by the ruling establishment has increased, adding that abrupt closures are forcing workers to take to the streets to voice their grievances.
