The Land and Land Reforms Department has dismantled a major sand smuggling network in Dantan, seizing 20 vehicles loaded with sand on Thursday. Each vehicle was fined one lakh rupees, sending shockwaves through the local illegal trade community.
Officials discovered that smugglers exploited the 12-hour “Carrying Order” allowed for transporting sand from Dantan to Panskura. Instead of reaching the destination, sand was offloaded at markets like Belda, Narayangarh, and Manoharpur, and then reloaded from the quarries using the same documents, allowing multiple illegal extractions from a single challan.
During inspections along the Suvarnarekha River, officers found that most challans issued from quarries were meant for Panskura. Authorities suspect that quarry owners were complicit in the scheme. The department is now preparing to notify state and district administration for strict action against the quarry owners.
