A speeding Audi car rammed into pedestrians and roadside vendors near Kharabas Circle in Jaipur late on Friday night, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others, police said. The crash triggered panic in the busy Patrakar Colony area, where dozens of people were present at the time.
According to preliminary findings, the luxury car was allegedly racing with another vehicle when it hit a road divider and went out of control. It then barrelled through roadside stalls and food carts along a nearly 30-metre stretch before crashing into a tree about 100 metres away, leaving the vehicle badly mangled.
Police officials said four people were inside the car and were allegedly intoxicated. One occupant has been detained, while others fled the scene. The vehicle has been seized and further investigation is underway to establish responsibility and sequence of events.
The injured were rushed to Jaipuria Hospital for initial treatment, with four critically injured patients referred to Sawai Man Singh Hospital. Doctors said several victims suffered serious injuries, while others had minor wounds; one person was brought dead.
The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Bairwa, a resident of Bhilwara. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma expressed grief over the death and directed officials to ensure proper medical care for the injured, while senior ministers visited hospitals to assess the situation.
