EC to set up polling booths in 69 multi-storey buildings across Bengal despite TMC objections

The Election Commission has announced the establishment of polling booths in 69 multi-storey residential buildings across West Bengal. The decision covers districts including South Kolkata, North Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, East Burdwan, and Hooghly.

Polling booths will be set up in 2 buildings in South Kolkata, 8 in North Kolkata, 25 in South 24 Parganas, 22 in North 24 Parganas, 4 in Howrah, 3 in East Burdwan, and 5 in Hooghly. The commission stated that only buildings with over 300 residents were considered for this plan.

The move comes after tensions over the proposal in recent months. The state CEO office initially sought reports from DEOs on eligible buildings and had withdrawn the plan after no applications were received. Following pressure from the Election Commission, a new survey was ordered to finalize eligible locations.

The state ruling party has consistently opposed polling booths in multi-storey buildings, citing security and fairness concerns. Meanwhile, BJP leaders argued that many residents avoid traditional polling stations on election day, making residential polling booths necessary for voter access.
