BJP gherao 'New TMC' MLA Sandipan Saha's house in Entally, protest over 'cut money'
A violent clash broke out in the Lake Town area on Sunday afternoon between two rival factions of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the control of a local Toto (e-rickshaw) union. The incident occurred around 2:00 PM near the Gauranga Nagar Dhalai Bridge during a meeting scheduled to discuss the income and expenditure accounts of the DLF-1 route. Tensions flared when the members of the previous committee refused to acknowledge the authority of the newly formed INTTUC-backed committee and allegedly declined to provide financial transparency.
The conflict is reportedly rooted in local political rivalry between the factions led by Sabyasachi Dutta and Tapas Chatterjee. While the old committee, said to be loyal to Dutta, held power for years, the new committee recently took over under Chatterjee’s influence. During the heated meeting, verbal spats quickly escalated into physical violence as members of the old guard allegedly attacked the new committee members. One individual sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Bidhannagar Hospital, where his condition remains critical.
The police acted swiftly upon receiving reports of the violence. A large police contingent reached the spot to disperse the warring groups and prevent further escalation. One person has been arrested in connection with the assault, and the police have initiated an investigation into the matter. The area remained tense throughout the evening as local leaders from both sides traded accusations regarding the misappropriation of union funds.
