Suicide attempt at Netaji Bhavan station disrupts metro services briefly

Kolkata’s Blue Line Metro services faced a major disruption on Sunday evening following a suicide attempt at the Netaji Bhavan Metro station. At approximately 6:30 pm, as a train was entering the platform, a passenger suddenly jumped onto the tracks. Although the motorman applied emergency brakes to stop the train, the individual sustained serious injuries. Quick response teams rescued the victim and rushed them to a nearby hospital for treatment.

The timing of the incident added to the chaos, as it was a cold Sunday evening and a large number of people were out visiting various parts of the city. Following the jump, power to the third rail was cut, and services were immediately halted across the entire corridor. This left thousands of passengers stranded inside stationary trains and crowded platforms, waiting for updates on the resumption of services.

To manage the crowd, Metro authorities initiated partial services. Trains were operated between Dakshineswar and Maidan in the north, and from Shahid Khudiram to Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge) in the south. However, the crucial stretch between Maidan and Tollygunge remained completely suspended for a significant period while the tracks were cleared and safety checks were conducted.
