"Kolkata to get Water Metro connectivity," says Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari
A fire broke out at the Baghajatin railway station on Monday morning, causing significant panic among commuters during the peak office hours. The blaze reportedly started around 6:00 AM at a temporary clothing shop located on Platform Number 2 (the Sealdah to Garia-bound down platform). Within minutes, the fire spread to adjacent stalls, engulfing the area in thick black smoke and causing passengers to flee to safer spots.
As the news of the fire spread, railway authorities immediately halted train services on the Sealdah South division’s down line as a precautionary measure. Several local trains were stopped at various stations, leading to a massive buildup of passengers at nearby terminals like Jadavpur and Garia. The disruption on the first working day of the week caused immense hardship for office-goers and daily commuters.
Upon receiving the alert, one fire tender was rushed to the spot. It took the firefighters approximately thirty minutes of intense effort to bring the flames under control and initiate the cooling process. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident, although the affected shops were completely gutted, resulting in heavy financial losses for the small-scale traders.
