An 80-year-old woman died after a fire broke out in her home while she was trying to keep warm on Sunday night in North Howrah. She was rushed to Howrah District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.
The deceased, identified as Radharani Saw, lived alone on the ground floor of an old house near Pilkhana Mor on GT Road. Around 8 PM, a sudden fire engulfed her house, leaving her severely burned.
Firefighters arrived promptly with two fire trucks and managed to control the blaze. Neighbors later revealed that Radharani Saw had been burning paper and wood inside the house to stay warm in the cold, which likely caused the fire.
Police confirmed that the elderly woman suffered from multiple age-related illnesses and was also mentally unwell. The exact cause of the fire is under investigation, and authorities are reviewing the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
