A typical Tuesday morning commute turned into a scene of terror at Kolkata’s Topsia More when a passenger-laden government bus overturned in the middle of the road. The vehicle was reportedly heading from Park Circus towards Science City when the driver lost control while navigating the intersection. The bus flipped onto its side with a deafening crash, instantly trapping dozens of panicked commuters inside.
The rescue operation faced immediate hurdles as the main exit of the bus was pinned against the road surface. Thinking quickly, local residents and bystanders rushed to the spot and used stones and heavy objects to shatter the rear glass windows of the bus. They managed to pull out the terrified passengers one by one. The bus conductor, who was stuck near the front gate, was among those seriously hurt and was later extricated by the combined efforts of locals and police.
At least ten passengers, including some in critical condition, were rushed to the Chittaranjan National Medical College and Hospital. Eyewitnesses claimed that the bus was travelling at a high speed when it tried to take a sharp turn, causing it to lose balance. The impact was so severe that the interior of the bus was completely mangled, and bloodstains were visible on the shattered glass and seats.
The accident caused a massive traffic gridlock at the crucial Topsia-Park Circus junction during peak office hours. Kolkata Police officials arrived with heavy-duty cranes to right the overturned vehicle and clear the thoroughfare.
