AMU woman diploma student dies by suicide in hostel room, family distress cited

A 20-year-old woman student pursuing a diploma course at Aligarh Muslim University allegedly died by suicide after hanging herself in her hostel room, university officials said on Tuesday. The incident took place at the Sarojini Naidu Hostel, triggering concern across the campus.

According to reports, the computer science student was on a video call with her father, who is based in West Asia, late on Monday night when she allegedly attempted to take her life. The father immediately alerted a relative living in Aligarh, who rushed to the hostel and informed university authorities.

With the assistance of AMU officials, the hostel room was opened and the student was found in a critical condition. She was rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital, where doctors tried to revive her for nearly three hours but she could not be saved.

AMU Proctor Mohammad Waseem Ali said fellow hostel inmates indicated that the student was under emotional distress due to her parents’ recent divorce and remarriage, despite her efforts to reconcile them. However, he said she was generally cheerful, popular among peers and had not shown visible signs of distress recently.

Police said a post-mortem examination was conducted on Tuesday and the body was handed over to the family. The student’s body is being taken to her hometown in Azamgarh, while police said all possible factors leading to the incident are being examined.
