A major fire broke out in the busy BB Ganguly Street area of Kolkata after flames first erupted in a wooden shop and quickly spread to several adjoining shops. The blaze intensified within a short time, causing extensive damage in the densely packed commercial zone.
On receiving information, 10 fire brigade engines rushed to the spot and began firefighting operations. The fire soon spread towards a multi-storey residential building, raising concern among residents. Thick black smoke engulfed the locality, creating panic and hampering visibility.
Firefighters faced severe challenges due to the presence of highly flammable materials in the shops. While there are no confirmed reports of casualties so far, fears of heavy losses remain. The exact cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed, though a short circuit is suspected. Fire department and police teams have launched an investigation.
