The body of a missing housewife was recovered from a pond in the Dantan police station area of West Medinipur on Wednesday morning, triggering shock and tension in the locality. The woman had been missing for several days, and her body was found floating in the pond on the day of Makar Sankranti. Police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination.
The deceased has been identified as Gopa Ghosh, a resident of Malpara village under Angua Gram Panchayat. She had gone missing on Friday night, and the case took a mysterious turn after her shoes and a torch were found on the pond bank in the Hasimpur area on Sunday. Despite continuous search operations over three days, the body was not traced initially.
Suspicion grew further after a bedsheet tied with bricks was recovered from the pond during the search operation. On Wednesday morning, the woman’s body finally surfaced in the same water body, intensifying concerns of foul play among family members and local residents.
The deceased’s father has alleged that his daughter was murdered due to long-standing family disputes at her in-laws’ house. The husband is reportedly absconding, while the police have detained the father-in-law and mother-in-law for questioning. Police said the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.
