A protest march under the banner of “Voice of Abhaya” was held on Thursday demanding the filing of a supplementary chargesheet in the Abhaya rape and murder case. Representatives of doctors’ organisations took part in the march and attempted to proceed towards the CBI office to press their demand.
The situation turned tense when Bidhannagar Police stopped the procession by erecting barricades on the route. As protesters tried to push past the barricades to continue their march, a scuffle broke out between the demonstrators and the police.
A large police force had been deployed in anticipation of the march, and officers worked to prevent the protesters from moving ahead. The confrontation led to brief chaos at the spot, though the situation was later brought under control, reports said.
