An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 struck the Leh–Ladakh region on Monday morning, with tremors reported from parts of the seismically active Himalayan belt. According to official data, the quake occurred at 11:51 am IST, triggering brief panic but no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The National Center for Seismology said the epicentre was located in Leh–Ladakh at a depth of 171 kilometres, indicating a deep-focus earthquake. Authorities stated that the situation is being closely monitored and advised people to remain cautious in view of possible aftershocks.
The tremor came a day after a separate earthquake was reported in Afghanistan, pointing to heightened seismic activity in the broader region. Officials noted that while deeper earthquakes generally cause less surface damage than shallow ones, vigilance remains essential in vulnerable mountainous areas.
