No Z+ cover for Humayun Kabir; Calcutta HC tells him 'go to Home Ministry'

The Calcutta High Court on Monday refused to entertain a petition filed by suspended Trinamool Congress MLA and Janata Unnayan Party founder Humayun Kabir, seeking “Z Plus” category security from the Central Armed Police Forces. The single bench of Justice Subrata Ghosh advised him to approach the Union Ministry of Home Affairs for the matter.

The court observed that decisions regarding the nature and level of security cover fall exclusively within the jurisdiction of the Union Home Ministry. It clarified that such decisions are taken based on an assessment of perceived threat and that judicial intervention in this process is not appropriate.

In his plea, Humayun Kabir, the MLA from Bharatpur Assembly constituency in Murshidabad district, claimed that there was a threat to his life and alleged that the state government had failed to provide him with adequate security.

The court’s order came against the backdrop of Kabir’s recent political developments. He was suspended from the Trinamool Congress following controversial remarks and later floated the Janata Unnayan Party, indicating possible alliances with non-BJP and non-Trinamool parties, though no alliance has been announced so far.
