Tension flared in Basanti of South 24 Parganas on Tuesday as local residents protested against alleged harassment linked to the SIR issue. Angry protesters blocked the Basanti State Highway at Sonakhali around 10 a.m., bringing traffic to a halt for nearly an hour as they staged a road blockade and set fire on the roadway to vent their anger.
Residents alleged that ordinary voters were being repeatedly summoned to hearing camps on various pretexts, causing distress and disruption to daily life. The protest soon escalated, with demonstrators accusing local authorities of unnecessarily targeting common people in the name of the SIR process.
During the unrest, extensive vandalism was reported inside the BDO office premises, where chairs and tables were allegedly picked up and thrown around. The situation created panic in the area before police from Basanti police station intervened and brought the situation under control, reports said.
