Magh brings relief from chill in Bengal, dry sunny days ahead

With the beginning of the month of Magh, the chill in West Bengal is gradually easing, bringing warmer days across the state. On Tuesday, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 14.2 degrees Celsius, with strong daytime sunshine reducing the impact of early morning and evening cold. Residents have already started putting away heavy blankets as the weather becomes milder.

According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, dry conditions are expected to prevail over the next few days. In Kolkata, skies are predicted to remain mostly clear, with maximum temperatures recently reaching 25.9 degrees Celsius. Light fog or mist may appear during early mornings due to higher humidity levels in the air, but it is expected to dissipate quickly as the day progresses.

In the southern districts, mornings may still experience light fog, but daytime warmth is gradually diminishing the cold’s effect. Meanwhile, North Bengal is expected to see little change in temperatures, with minimums in hilly areas like Darjeeling remaining between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius. In the plains districts, including Malda and North Dinajpur, temperatures are likely to stay between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius over the coming days.

Meteorologists explained that the weakening cold is influenced by an active Western Disturbance in northwestern India, along with a new system forming on Wednesday, disrupting the flow of cold winds from the north. The withdrawal of the northeast monsoon from southern India is also contributing to warmer conditions. The decline in cold wave intensity is being observed not only in Bengal but across northern and eastern India.
