Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
A massive protest erupted on Tuesday in the Kazipara and Genji Mill areas of Barasat against the alleged harassment of residents during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. Hundreds of locals blocked the busy Jessore Road, accusing the Election Commission of arbitrarily summoning voters for hearings, which they claimed caused severe mental and physical distress.
Protesters alleged that nearly 40 percent of the village population had received notices to appear at SIR hearings without any clear or valid reason. Expressing their anger, many villagers lay down on the road and raised slogans, demanding an immediate halt to what they described as unjustified and intimidating practices.
The prolonged road blockade led to complete traffic paralysis on Jessore Road, with long queues of vehicles forming on both sides. Office-goers, school buses, and emergency commuters were badly affected. As tensions escalated, a large police force from Barasat police station was deployed to bring the situation under control.
