Tension escalated in Medinipur after ASHA workers heading to Kolkata for the “Swasthya Bhavan” campaign were stopped by police at Medinipur railway station. The workers were travelling to press their demands when police allegedly prevented them from boarding trains, triggering strong protests.
Following the obstruction, hundreds of ASHA workers gathered near the Rangamati flyover and staged a sit-in on the railway tracks. Several protesters lay down on the tracks as a mark of protest, leading to complete disruption of train services on the Kharagpur–Medinipur rail section and causing panic among railway authorities.
The protesting workers alleged that they were travelling peacefully and termed the police action a violation of their democratic rights. Raising slogans against the administration, they demanded immediate permission to proceed to Kolkata and continue their campaign.
