Family alleges police inaction after New Town man dies by assault during drinking session

The death of Jaydev Majumdar, a resident of Vivekananda Pally in Yatragachhi, New Town, has triggered tension in the locality, with his family alleging that he died after being brutally assaulted during a dispute while drinking with friends. The family has demanded strict punishment for those responsible.

According to relatives, Jaydev was drinking with a group of friends when an argument broke out over an unspecified issue. The dispute soon turned violent, and Jaydev was allegedly assaulted. Family members claimed that one of his friends later left him at home in a critical condition and fled.

Jaydev was first taken to Bidhannagar Sub-Divisional Hospital, where he received initial treatment. Doctors later referred him to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital after his condition deteriorated. He died during treatment at around 7:30 pm on the night of January 20.

The family has alleged that New Town Police Station did not initially take their complaint seriously, deepening their anguish. They have demanded an impartial investigation and exemplary punishment for the accused. Police have said the case is under investigation and further action will depend on the post-mortem report.
