The acclaimed Manipuri film Boong has been nominated for the BAFTA 2026 awards in the Best Children’s and Family Film category, marking a significant milestone for regional Indian cinema on the global stage. The nomination places the film among an international lineup of high-profile productions.

Written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong has been nominated alongside films such as Arco, Lilo & Stitch and Zootropolis (Zootopia) 2, reflecting strong competition in the category. The recognition highlights the growing global appreciation for stories rooted in regional cultures.

The film is produced by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures. It had earlier drawn wide attention after its world premiere at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received appreciation for its emotional depth and storytelling.

Boong tells the story of a young boy from a Manipuri village who lives with his single mother following the unexplained disappearance of his father, Joykumar. Once employed outside the village, the father’s absence leaves the family with unanswered questions and emotional hardship.

Driven by love and hope, the boy sets out on a journey with his friend to search for his missing father, hoping to give his mother what he calls “the best gift ever.” The film’s heartfelt narrative forms the emotional core that has resonated with audiences and juries alike.
