West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday made it clear that the state would pursue industrial development, but not at the cost of agricultural land. Speaking at a government and political programme in Singur, she said job creation remained a priority, while protecting farmers’ interests would remain non-negotiable.
The Chief Minister said an industrial park had been developed on eight acres of land in Singur to promote employment without acquiring fertile farmland. She underlined that development and agriculture could go hand in hand if planned responsibly, adding that the state government was committed to balanced growth.
Recalling the Singur land movement, Banerjee referred to her role in opposing the acquisition of agricultural land in 2006. She spoke about her 26-day hunger strike and said she had stood firmly with farmers during the agitation, calling the eventual return of land to cultivators a reflection of her political commitment.
Taking an indirect dig at the Centre, the Chief Minister said she had taken personal risks to fulfil her promise of returning the land, while others limited themselves to announcements. She alleged that several projects implemented by the state were later claimed by the Centre.
During the programme, Banerjee also laid foundation stones for multiple government projects and distributed benefits to eligible beneficiaries. She reiterated that the state would continue its development agenda while safeguarding the rights and livelihoods of farmers and local residents.
