Tension flared in the BJP’s Uttarpara–Makhla mandal after a meeting addressed by senior leader Dilip Ghosh, with allegations of a violent attack inside the mandal office soon after the programme. Mandal president Gautam Majhi was allegedly assaulted along with several party workers, triggering unrest within the local party unit.
According to the complaint, Majhi, along with Arup Dey, Tapas Dey and Rajiv Debnath, was beaten with revolver butts, bricks and bamboo sticks. The injured leaders and workers were first taken to Uttarpara State General Hospital for primary treatment and later approached the Uttarpara police station to lodge a formal complaint over the incident.
Majhi, who sustained serious injuries and was admitted to a private nursing home, alleged from his hospital bed that the attack was orchestrated by supporters of BJP Hooghly–Srirampur organisational district president Suman Ghosh. He claimed that unrest was deliberately created across the mandal area to weaken the party’s prospects, adding that he had been under pressure to resign ever since his appointment as mandal president.
