Another KMC councillor, Biswajit Mondal arrested, after woman alleges molestation and threats
Kharagpur traffic police launched a strict joint special drive on Thursday to curb noise pollution, traffic violations and road safety risks across the town. The operation was carried out by Kharagpur Town Police and Kharagpur Town Traffic Guard under the supervision of Traffic OC Sangeet Roy.
During the drive, police seized 10 motorcycles fitted with illegally modified silencers after inspections found noise levels exceeding 85 decibels. The action followed repeated public complaints about excessive noise. Vehicle owners have been directed to remove the illegal silencers, refit original manufacturer-approved ones, and report to the police station before their bikes are released.
The campaign also focused on technical violations. Three motorcycles without number plates and two fully modified bikes were seized, while spot fines were imposed on the spot for multiple traffic offences detected during checking.
Traffic police also issued warnings to bus drivers to immediately stop using high-volume horns and switch to standard horns. Officials said the enforcement drive would continue with greater strictness in the coming days to ensure compliance with traffic norms.
The ongoing drive is currently concentrated in the Inda and Barabetia areas and will be expanded in phases to major junctions across Kharagpur. Action is also being intensified against helmetless riding, triple riding, mobile phone use while driving, missing documents, and seat belt violations, with separate checks planned for autos and Totos operating at night without proper lights.
