Court sends Councilor Mahesh Sharma to 6-day police custody in extortion case
The Baguihati police station foiled a major robbery plot late on Friday night after acting swiftly on a local tip-off. Three notorious criminals were arrested while allegedly gathering to commit the crime near the No. 7 footbridge connecting Keshpur and Salt Lake.
Police recovered a firearm, two rounds of ammunition, a sharp-edged chopper, and lock-picking tools from the accused. The arrested men have been identified as Irshad Afridi alias Chhotu, Mohammad Zafar, and Sheikh Izan Ali, all of whom have a long criminal history.
According to police, locals reported seeing suspicious young men roaming on a motorcycle in the area. When officers cordoned off the location, the suspects attempted to flee but were chased and apprehended. During questioning, it emerged that the trio had earlier attacked a South Bidhannagar police team that had gone to investigate a theft case.
Police said the accused are part of a larger criminal gang active in Baguiati and nearby areas and are suspected to be involved in several recent theft and snatching incidents. On Saturday, the three were produced before the Barasat court, where police sought 14 days of custody to trace other gang members and uncover further criminal plans.
