A major accident was narrowly averted on the first day of the secondary examination at Nakakati Gach Higher Secondary School in the Tufanganj-1 block, where nearly 200 candidates were appearing for the exam. The incident triggered widespread panic but resulted in no loss of life or property due to swift action by the police and administration.
The examination began on time on Monday, with 202 candidates taking the test at the centre. During the exam, a gas cylinder suddenly caught fire while tea was being prepared in the school canteen, and flames quickly spread, creating chaos on the campus.
Police personnel deployed at the centre immediately reacted, dragging the burning gas cylinder out of the school building and placing it in an open field. Before the fire brigade could arrive, the cylinder exploded with a loud sound, intensifying fear among students and staff.
Hearing the explosion, frightened candidates rushed out of the examination hall and gathered in the school grounds, leading to a temporary disruption of the examination. Normalcy was restored after the situation was brought under control.
