A woman died during a sterilization operation at the Semra Referral Hospital in Bagaha, triggering widespread unrest and protests in the area. The incident led to angry villagers blocking the Bagaha-Semra main road for several hours, raising serious concerns over alleged medical negligence and the state of rural healthcare facilities.
The deceased has been identified as Kewanti Devi, wife of Ramji Oraon and a resident of Dadhiya village under the Semra police station area. According to family members, she was admitted to the referral hospital for a sterilization procedure. The family alleged that the surgery was initiated without reviewing essential medical test reports, despite the woman reportedly suffering from anemia. Relatives claimed that Kewanti Devi’s condition worsened during the operation, but she did not receive timely or adequate treatment. The family also alleged that no ambulance was arranged to shift her to a better-equipped medical facility. Villagers maintained that proper medical care and emergency support could have saved her life.
The incident has intensified concerns regarding the fragile healthcare infrastructure in rural regions. Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the allegations, while local anger continues to mount over claims of negligence and lack of emergency medical preparedness at the hospital.
