Chill returns to Bengal, night temperatures set to drop to 11-12 degree celsius

Just when it seemed that winter was making a premature exit from Bengal due to persistent westerly winds, the cold has begun to return once again. Cold and dry winds from the northwest have regained strength, bringing back a noticeable chill across several parts of the state.

According to satellite images released by the Meteorological Department, there is currently no sign of any Western Disturbance over northwestern India. As a result, there is no barrier to the free movement of cold winds towards eastern India. Weather expert Ravindra Goenka explained that the cold winds from the northwest are moving towards the Bay of Bengal through the ‘Digha corridor’. While this airflow is not directly impacting the Gangetic plains, it is expected to significantly influence the western districts of West Bengal. As a result, night temperatures in these areas may once again dip to around 11–12 degrees Celsius.

Kolkata and its adjoining areas are also likely to experience a gradual fall in minimum temperatures. The city recorded a minimum temperature of 16.6 degrees Celsius on Friday morning, slightly below normal. In the coming days, the mercury could drop further to around 14 degrees Celsius. However, meteorologists point out that this cold spell will largely be confined to nighttime and early morning hours. As the day progresses, temperatures are expected to rise, bringing relief from the chill during daylight hours.
