Tension gripped Barrackpore on Monday following the death of an elderly man, Tulsi Adhikari, after an altercation with former Trinamool Congress councillor Rabindranath Bhattacharya in North Barrackpore. Tulsi Adhikari later died in hospital, prompting his family to lodge a complaint alleging assault.
Acting on the complaint, Barrackpore police arrested the former Trinamool councillor on Sunday night. Since morning, the incident has triggered unrest in the area, with heightened police presence to prevent further escalation.
Former Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh led a protest at Chiriamore crossing, blocking the road for a considerable time. Although police initially restored calm, tensions resurfaced when Singh, along with BJP workers and supporters, attempted to march towards Barrackpore Court and were stopped, leading to a scuffle with police despite efforts by senior officials to defuse the situation.
