A massive fire broke out late Monday night at a timber depot in the Gagan Mor area under Amta police station in Howrah district, completely gutting two warehouses and damaging a parked four-wheeler. The blaze took several hours to control and was finally brought under check on Tuesday morning.
According to reports, the fire erupted suddenly at a timber warehouse located along the Amta–Narid road. Due to the large quantity of wood stored inside, the flames spread rapidly and soon engulfed an adjacent warehouse where electronic goods were kept, leading to extensive losses.
Several refrigerators and air conditioners stored in the electronics warehouse were destroyed in the fire. The flames also reached a four-wheeler parked in front of the warehouses, causing severe damage. The owner of the timber warehouse sustained injuries during the incident.
Three fire tenders were deployed after police and fire services were alerted. Senior police officials, including Howrah Rural Superintendent of Police Suvimal Pal, reached the spot. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and a forensic investigation has been sought to determine whether the incident was accidental or otherwise.
