The South Kolkata Congress on Tuesday held a protest at Hazra More against the newly concluded trade agreement between India and the United States, alleging that the deal was finalised in secrecy and against national interest. Party leaders accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of bypassing the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha and the Union Cabinet, and claimed that the agreement was signed under American pressure and on US terms.
During the protest, Congress workers warned that the implementation of the agreement would severely impact the farming community, increase unemployment and weaken the country’s economy. Effigies of Prime Minister Modi and former US President Donald Trump were burnt as a mark of opposition, with protesters alleging that the deal would cripple India’s agricultural marketing system and lead to a fall in the value of the currency.
