Anger among small shopkeepers resurfaced on Tuesday near Loco Tank More along GT Road in Asansol, as traders protested against the Asansol Municipal Corporation for failing to provide alternative shops even three years after their eviction. The shopkeepers were removed from the area earlier in the name of city beautification, following which the civic body had assured them of rehabilitation through allotment of alternative spaces.
The agitating traders alleged that despite repeated appeals, no concrete steps were taken to rehabilitate them. They claimed that out of 41 shopkeepers who were evicted, 40 are still waiting for alternative arrangements, while one trader was allegedly allowed to operate a nursery at the same location, raising questions over fairness and transparency in the process.
Protesting the alleged discrimination, several shopkeepers staged a demonstration at the site on Tuesday. During the agitation, an incident of vandalism was reported at the park developed by the municipal corporation, further escalating tensions in the area.
