No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
In a significant development in the legal battle over the violence in Beldanga, Murshidabad district, the Supreme Court has declined to interfere with the investigation being carried out by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). The decision comes as a setback for the state government, with the apex court making it clear that the probe will continue as it stands.
A division bench comprising Chief Justice Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi observed that there was no ground for the Supreme Court to intervene at this stage. The bench directed that the entire matter be sent back to the Calcutta High Court for further proceedings, effectively allowing the High Court to examine the issues in detail.
During Wednesday’s hearing, the Supreme Court instructed the NIA to submit its investigation report in a sealed cover before the Calcutta High Court on the next date of hearing. The court clarified that the High Court will take a final call on whether provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) should be invoked in the case after examining the NIA’s findings.
