Bidhannagar Mayor Krishna Chakraborty resigns, another massive blow to TMC
A fresh confrontation erupted between the BJP-led government and the Congress during the Budget Session after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju alleged that Congress MPs entered Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s chamber, abused him and threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Sharing what he described as an “illegal video” recorded by a Congress MP, Rijiju claimed 20-25 MPs were involved in the incident.
In a post accompanying an eight-second clip, Rijiju said his party believes in debate and discussion and does not encourage MPs to physically threaten anyone. He alleged that the Speaker was “deeply hurt” by the episode and said he had personally spoken to Om Birla. Rijiju also referred to a dispute in the House over speaking permissions, asserting that no member, including the Prime Minister, can speak without the Chair’s approval.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra rejected the allegations, calling them false. “We did not abuse anyone. One or two MPs were agitated, and they expressed it. He also said that I was encouraging them, which is a lie. I was sitting quietly. In the end, I said a few things peacefully,” she said, dismissing claims of threats or misconduct.
The controversy comes amid ongoing friction between the government and the Opposition in Parliament. Rijiju objected to Rahul Gandhi leaving the House after speaking during the debate on the Union Budget 2026-27. The BJP is planning to move a motion seeking Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification and a further life ban from contesting elections, alleging that he misled Parliament.
Rahul Gandhi has been attempting to cite an unpublished book by former Army Chief Gen MM Naravane, claiming it exposes the government’s handling of the 2020 China border issue. The government has disputed these claims. Priyanka Gandhi also criticised the government over the India-US trade deal and said action against her brother would not deter him.
