‘India will continue to stand with democratic Bangladesh’: PM Modi hails BNP victory

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Tarique Rahman after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secured a decisive victory in the parliamentary elections. In a message posted on X, Modi said India would continue to support a democratic and inclusive Bangladesh and expressed hope of strengthening bilateral ties.

“I convey my warm congratulations to Mr. Tarique Rahman on leading BNP to a decisive victory in the Parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership,” the Prime Minister wrote. He added, “India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals.”

Rahman-led BNP emerged as the single largest force in the elections, winning 177 seats along with its allies as counting neared completion. Results were declared in 237 constituencies, while counting continued in the remaining seats. Jamaat-e-Islami and its allies secured 53 constituencies, according to the latest available figures.

The election marked the first national vote since the 2024 student uprising that led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. The outcome is being viewed as a significant political shift in Bangladesh’s landscape.

With BNP poised to form the government, the focus is now expected to turn to the future course of India-Bangladesh relations, regional cooperation and shared development priorities.
