A six-year-old boy was killed and four others were injured after a speeding car driven by a Class 12 student rammed into an autorickshaw and pedestrians in Lucknow’s Banthra area on Thursday evening. The accused, identified as Gaurab Singh, has been taken into custody and an FIR has been registered on charges of reckless driving and endangering life.
According to police, the incident occurred around 6 pm near a Hanuman temple when the Swift car allegedly hit an autorickshaw before ploughing into people walking along the roadside. The injured were identified as Armaan, 12, Awadh Bihari, 42, Sadhana Verma, 35, Meena Devi, 60, and six-year-old Dikshant Patel.
All the injured were rushed to hospital for treatment. Dikshant Patel, who sustained critical injuries, was referred to another medical facility where he later succumbed during treatment, police said.
Police stated that the accused was returning with four friends from a farewell party at the time of the accident. He had allegedly borrowed the car from a friend and possessed a valid driving licence. The accused reportedly claimed that he got “confused” between the brake and accelerator pedals and that a tyre burst, leading to the crash. Officials said these claims are being verified.
ACP (Krishna Nagar) Rajneesh Verma confirmed that the accused has been detained and legal proceedings are underway. The incident has once again raised concerns over speeding and road safety, coming days after another high-profile crash in Kanpur involving a luxury car left several pedestrians injured.
