Bengal dancer critical after coin forced into throat during Bihar performance

A dancer was hospitalised after spectators allegedly forced coins into her mouth during a stage performance in Bihar’s Bhojpur district, triggering panic and a police investigation. The incident took place at a local cultural programme in the Chandwa Tola area. Doctors at Ara Sadar Hospital removed a coin from her throat and said she remains under close observation.

According to eyewitnesses, the performer, who hails from West Bengal and had travelled to Ara for the event, was entertaining a large crowd when some spectators climbed onto the stage in excitement. In the ensuing commotion, a few individuals allegedly shoved coins into her mouth, a gesture sometimes associated with stage performances.

Moments later, she began experiencing severe discomfort and her condition deteriorated rapidly. The festive atmosphere turned chaotic as organisers realised the seriousness of the situation. She was rushed to Ara Sadar Hospital for emergency treatment, where doctors conducted urgent examinations and removed the coin lodged in her throat.

Her husband said she had swallowed one of the coins after it was forcibly put into her mouth. Medical officials stated that her health remains critical and that further tests are being carried out to assess possible internal injuries. Additional procedures may be undertaken if required.

Police and district authorities have launched an investigation, recording statements of organisers and eyewitnesses to determine accountability and possible lapses in crowd management. The incident has sparked fresh concerns about performer safety and the need for stricter security protocols at public cultural events.
