Ahead of the anniversary of the Pahalgam incident, the Army has unveiled a special red rose variety named “Operation Sindoor”, describing it as a tribute to bravery and indomitable courage. The rose was formally launched on Friday after approval from the Ministry of Home Affairs and has been made available in the market from Saturday.
The hybrid variety has been developed at Pushpanjali Rose Garden in Jakpur, Kharagpur, by noted rose breeder Pranabir Maity. He has earlier created several distinctive rose varieties named after prominent national landmarks, including Rashtrapati Bhavan. Army officials, including Brigadier Sudhir Sodhi of the Eastern Command, unveiled the new rose at a flower market event.
The fragrant red bloom features 30 to 35 petals and grows to a height of 120 to 150 centimetres. It flowers throughout the year, is highly disease-resistant and can be cultivated both in pots and directly in soil, making it suitable for home gardens as well as larger plantations.
