No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
In a shocking incident in Kanpur, a 51-year-old retired army man allegedly shot dead his wife and 16-year-old son before dying by suicide on a railway track. The incident occurred in the Sen West Para police station area and came to light after police identified the man through his motorcycle number following his death under a goods train near the Kathogar–Imlipur railway underpass.
The deceased have been identified as Chetram Paswan (51), his wife Sunita Verma (40), and their son Deep (16). According to police, Chetram first used his licensed double-barrel gun to shoot his wife in the head and his son in the chest inside their home in Tulsiyapur. Blood was found scattered from the kitchen to the bedroom. After the shooting, he rode his motorcycle to the railway underpass and lay down in front of an oncoming train.
Police received information around 7:30 a.m. that a man had died by suicide after being run over by a goods train. An Aadhaar card recovered from his pocket and the motorcycle parked nearby led to his identification. When officers reached his house and found the door open, they entered after receiving no response and discovered the bodies of his wife and son. Forensic teams seized the firearm, empty cartridges, blood samples, blood-stained clothes and a mobile phone from the scene.
Investigators said Chetram had recently built a new house and had earlier taken a loan of ₹12 lakh for construction and his daughter’s marriage. Family members stated that the loan had been repaid after farmland was sold. Neighbours also reported that the couple had an argument late Sunday night. Police said the exact motive behind the extreme step is yet to be ascertained.
Meanwhile, Sunita’s family has raised doubts over the sequence of events. Her brother alleged that Chetram did not commit the murders and suicide and claimed that someone else may be involved. Police have said the investigation is ongoing and all angles are being examined.
