Coast Guard detains 28 fishermen, seizes Bangladeshi trawler for territorial breach

The Indian Coast Guard has detained 28 fishermen and seized a Bangladeshi trawler for allegedly violating Indian territorial waters in the Bay of Bengal. The vessel, identified as “Sagar-3,” was intercepted during routine patrolling after it reportedly attempted to change direction despite being signaled to stop. Following a brief chase, Coast Guard personnel detained those on board and escorted them ashore.

All detainees were handed over to the Fraserganj Coastal Police Station, where local police formally arrested the 28 fishermen on charges of illegal intrusion. The trawler has also been seized as part of the investigation. Authorities are examining the circumstances under which the vessel entered Indian waters.

During preliminary interrogation, investigators reportedly uncovered a possible smuggling angle. Some of the arrested fishermen allegedly confessed that, under the guise of fishing, there was a plan to bring a Bangladeshi national identified as Rabindranath Das into India. Police are continuing their probe to verify the claims and determine the full extent of the alleged plan.
