The Delhi High Court on Tuesday extended the interim bail of Jaideep Singh Sengar, brother of expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar, till February 20, 2026, in connection with the death of the Unnao rape victim’s father. The relief was granted even as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) opposed further extension of bail.
Jaideep was originally granted interim bail on medical grounds due to his ongoing treatment for relapsed oral cancer. The bail, first granted in July 2024, has been extended periodically, with the previous extension valid till February 17. His latest application sought suspension of sentence for an additional three months on health grounds.
During the hearing, the CBI submitted that certain medical documents relied upon by Jaideep to seek extension of bail may have been fabricated. The court directed the agency to file a detailed verification report on the authenticity of the documents and fixed February 20 as the next date of hearing. The bench observed that the CBI had not yet filed a verification report and granted time to do so.
The matter is being heard in Jaideep’s appeal against his March 2020 conviction. He was among seven individuals convicted in connection with the 2018 custodial death of the Unnao rape victim’s father. The trial court had found them guilty of offences including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, wrongful restraint and causing hurt, and sentenced them to 10 years’ imprisonment.
The victim’s father had allegedly been assaulted by a group, including Jaideep, when he had gone to attend a court hearing in the rape case. He was later arrested by police in an arms case and subsequently died of multiple injuries sustained in custody. Day-to-day hearings in Jaideep’s appeal had been scheduled to commence from February 11.
